Directions
-
1
Place a rack near the center of the oven and preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside for later use.
-
2
In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and orange zest. Using your fingers or the back of a spoon mash the zest into the sugar to release the oils. Set aside.
-
3
In a mixing bowl, sift together the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda.
-
4
Add the sugar and zest mixture and cut in the butter using a pastry cutter or potato masher. Continue to cut until butter breaks down to about pea sizes pieces or flakes.
-
5
In another bowl, combine egg and buttermilk and beat with a fork.
-
6
Add to the flour mixture. Stir until a soft dough forms. Fold in the blackberries.
-
7
Turn onto a floured board and knead until just combined. Pat dough out to 1-inch thickness and using a 2 inch cutter, cut disks. Reshape and roll dough to create mores scones with excess scraps.
-

Place on parchment lined baking sheet.
-
9
Brush lightly with beaten egg and sprinkle with sugar.
-
10
Bake for 15-18 minutes or until golden brown.
